Mackay is a major area for both sugar cane and coal mining. Hay Point to the south of the town is the world's biggest coal port, while the northern beaches are beautiful. The town itself is
fairly utilitarian. We were there in a spell of unsettled weather which gave us some drizzle while Brisbane and the surrounding coast had some serious flooding.
