Day 30 - April 24th

Crestville - Florida Caverns State Park

Nasty cool, dull, misty, damp morning (a good time not to be packing a tent). Where is this, Scotland. We breakfast on donuts and juice at the motel then head out onto Rt 90 for much of the day. The road is fairly quiet to begin with, a good thing as visibility is very poor. First stop is DeFuniak Springs, a pretty town centered on an artificial lake surrounded by attractive old buildings. One of those buildings is a library and we arrive as it open to make use of the toilets and 2 hours on the internet. This still doesn't solve the problem of getting from St Augustine to our car rental in Orlando via Ocala though.

While we've been in the library the weather has cleared and become very hot, but it cools later in the day. Rt 90 continues through a succession of small towns, some areas have shoulders, others none which is not much fun. The worst parts are new, built with rubble edging the road rather than pavement (tarmac for the Brits). Some of the trucks are pretty close but only one really scares me. At least we have a tail wind and the route is due east so the miles speed by.

Lunch in Chipley where we find a little park to eat our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, more attractive than the usual gas station forecourt, before we press on through more small towns to Marianna. The route today has had a fair amount of gentle up and down but after buying groceries the last few miles to Florida Caverns S.P. includes some tough climbs, and after we check in we find the site is 2 miles further into the park.

The site is pleasant but the mosquito's become more and more voracious and after relaxing for a while in my hammock, cooking fahitas and showering I retreat to the tent.
