Cape Farewell is the northern tip of the South Island. Farewell Spit is a sand bar stretching 22km west of the Cape, deposited by the prevailing west coast currents. To the east of the
Cape and south of the Spit there is an extensive shallow sandy bay, while the west side of the spit is wild and windy.
