Tangiwai

 
Site of New Zealand's greatest railway disaster. The Whangaehu River was the site of a lahar (a sudden outpouring from Mount Ruapehu's crater lake which caused the 1953 disaster) in March 2007, accounting for the mud and still sulphurous smell.
