Much of inland southern California is part of the Mohave Desert, and a large swathe has now been protected as part of the Mohave Desert National Preserve (like a National Park but hunting is
permitted). This area includes desert, dunes, lava flows, Joshua Trees, railway history and rock formations. A small California State Park within the National Preserve features mining history and a fine cave tour.
